Pessinous, the sacred city of the Anatolian Mother Goddess Kybele, is situated centrally on he Anatolian plateau, about 150 km southwest of the capital Ankara. A major part of the ancient city is situated under the modern village of Ballihisar. According to tradition, the site dates back to the Phrygian era as a cult site and settlement. The famous King Midas himself is supposed to have founded Pessinous and erected the first sanctuary of Kybele in the 8lh century BC. The cult of the Mother Goddess spread first across the Greek world and then from Pessinous throughout the Roman Empire, and conquered the classical world.
he excavations that have been carried out at the site since 1967 by the Belgian Archaeological teams of Ghent Iniversity have unearthed the heart of ancient Pessinous.

 Publisher: Homer Kitabevi
ISBN No: 9789944483230

Book details:

176 pp, color figures, in English.

The ancient city of Elaiussa Sebaste (today Ayas) lies on the south-eastern coast of Turkey. The birth and the development of the settlement were granted by the favourable geographical position of the city, situated along the important coastal road connecting Asia Minor to Syria and projected in the intense commercial traffic of the eastern Mediterranean and, secondly, to the abundant natural resources of the hinterland - timber from the Tauro forests, vineyards and olive trees (elaion) to which the name Elaiussa itself alludes.
The site was, during the Roman age, one of the most important cities of the Roman province of Cilicia, which developed considerably in the 2nd and 3rd century AD; it maintained its prestigious role as significant trading port until the Late Empire and the first Byzantine age. Thanks to its long and continuous life, Elaiussa can be indeed qualified as a remarkable case study for the deepening of historical and archaeological knowledge on the dynamics of the development and evolution of urban centres in the Eastern Mediterranean area.
Prof. Dr. Eugenia EquiniSchneider (Universita diRoma "Sapienza", Italy) has been the head of the excavation team in Elaiussa Sebaste since 1995.

Book details:

72 pp, in Turkish.

Museological Training Seminars I: Museums of the Mediterranean Region]. Edited by Bekir Onur. Suna & İnan Kıraç Research Institute on Mediterranean Civilisations. Antalya 2003.
Congress, Symposium, Seminar Series: 1

Training in Museological studies is a quite recent concept in Turkey but it is developing and studies and publications on this subject increase from day to day. The crux of the matter is to organise all of these individual enterprises under a single policy, with a regular and well-organised status and to spread it across the country. On the side of the universities, there is such an attempt: the “Museology Department” of the Institute of Social Sciences of Yıldız Technical University has been active since 1989 and that of the Institute of Social Sciences of Ankara University since 1997. Indeed, this is also within the scope of various other institutions. One leading institution is the Suna & İnan Kıraç Research Institute on Mediterranean Civilizations, in short AKMED, of the Vehbi Koç Foundation. AKMED has initiated an enterprise with the aim of spreading museological training across the country and of institutionalising it everywhere, above all amongst museum curators. Its first product is the First Museological Training Seminar for the Museums of the Mediterranean Region. It can be conjectured that such seminars will also be held in other regions of the country. Thus, it is reasonable to expect that, firstly, of all the museum curators and their professional organisations, then members of other non-governmental organisations, teachers and researchers will become involved in it. Certainly the most effective step will take place when this issue is undertaken by state offices.

The museological training seminar held at Antalya on October 10th - 11th, 2002, brought together curators from all the museums in the region, and members from the Museum Curators Society, the Archaeologists Society, the Anatolian Art Historian Society and the Society of Art History, as well as scholars from the relevant branches of the universities. The aim was to discuss both the developments in museology and the problems of museological training…

When attempting to understand and comment on the civilisation in which we live, one of the subjects that arouses the most curiosity is undoubtedly the desire to learn the stages that mankind has passed through to reach this point in time. In the book in front of you the author has attempted to describe, with archaeological facts, some of the development process of civilisation in the prehistoric period before the discovery of writing, from around 8000 to 2000 BC, in the region of Southwest Anatolia, Burdur and Antalya.

The presence of many impressive city and monuments from the Classical Period in the Antalya and Burdur regions and their vicinity reflects the importance of this region in historical times. However, the region also has important and interesting finds from the prehistoric periods. One of the aims of this book is to introduce and describe as many as possible of the visual finds uncovered in the excavations carried out over the past 50 years at the four main prehistoric settlements of the region, Hacilar, Kurucay, Hoyucek and Bademagaci.

While some of the pictures, drawings and plans are presented for the first time in this book, most of them have been published before in excavation reports, books or articles. However, as is the case in most academic fields, the majority of these publications are only read by professionals, making it virtually impossible for most people to have access to them. It is hoped that this book will help to change this situation to a degree, as it has been presented in such a way as to enable all those interested in the subject to benefit from the information given.

Between 1953 and 1956 this long marble building was rebuilt by the American School of Classical Studies to store and display finds from the excavations. Using original materials and techniques, the modern builders learnt much about the construction and purpose of stoas, a ubiquitous Classical building type. This illustrated account presents some of their findings.
This book discusses the complex engineering that channeled fresh water into the Agora and disposed of waste water, and shows some of the ornate wells and fountain houses where ancient Athenians gathered to drink and bathe.
Some of these plants are wild and some were deliberately introduced to Athens in Classical times. This booklet presents evidence for ancient horticulture in the Agora (for example, structured antique gardens were uncovered around the Temple of Hephaistos). Its color plates also provide a useful guide to identifying modern Greek vegetation.
Over 150 ancient burial places have been found by excavators and a few of the more remarkable are described here. These range from a wealthy Mycenaean chamber tomb, filled with the vases and jewelry of a rich noblewoman, to the poignant pithos burial of an infant from around 725 BC, accompanied by eight tiny vases. As well as describing the assemblages found, the author discusses the symbolism of funeral rites, and the information about social status and identity that burials reveal.
This booklet illustrates the archaeological, documentary and pictorial evidence for trades as diverse as shoe-making, fish mongering, cloth making, and the manufacture of luxury goods and perfumes. Shopping was just one aspect of this public space: Ancient Athenians would also have received medical treatment, been married and buried, made sacrifices, and received education in the Agora . . . and the material remains from these activities are also discussed. Vivid pictures and useful resources, like a table of prices and coinage, bring the bustling market-place to life.

As well as providing a helpful guide to the site, this fascinating booklet also offers a unique insight into the work of physicians in the Greek world, and the types of diseases they had to contend with.
As well as illustrating some of the surviving finished products, the author discusses the techniques used to cast bronze, and the level of skill involved in producing complex metal statuary.
Book details:

Corinth Notes 2

32 pp, b/w figures, in English

When the Roman tourist Pausanias visited Corinth around A.D. 160, he saw many shrines and buildings high up to the south of the city, on the slopes of Acrocorinth. This booklet describes excavations at one of these, the Sanctuary of Demeter and Persephone (Kore). The details of religious rites revealed are of particular interest since the cult of the two goddesses, also celebrated at Eleusis, is one of the most mysterious in antiquity, and no literary testimony exists to explain what may have happened behind the high walls. Terracotta dolls, ritual meals of pork, and miniature models of food-filled platters hint at a vigorous religious tradition associated with human and agricultural fertility.
Every kind of case, from assault and battery to murder, and from small debts to contested fortunes, were heard in various buildings and spaces around the civic center, and the speeches given in defense and prosecution remain some of the masterpieces of Greek literature. As well as describing the spaces where judgments were made (such as the Stoa Basileios, office of the King Archon), the author discusses the progress of some famous cases (known from the speeches of orators like Demosthenes), such as the patrimony suit of a woman named Plangon against the nobleman Mantias, or the assault charge leveled by Ariston against Konon and his sons.

Book details:

Excavations of the Athenian Agora Picture Book No:14

32 pp, b/w figures, in English

"Return the stamnos to Philippa's brother Philip", "cheap wine", "Alkaios seems beautiful to Melis", "Of Tharrios I am the cup". Like fragments of conversation, the thousands of informal inscriptions scratched and painted on potsherds, tiles and other objects give us a unique insight into the everyday life of the Athenian Agora. Some are marks of ownership, or the notes of merchants, but many are sexual innuendos, often accompanied by graphic illustrations. Using her wide contextual knowledge, the author suggests why these scraps of sentences were written, and what they can tell us about one of the first widely literate societies.
