The lack of a comprehensive etymological dictionary of the Turkish language and requests of colleagues to reprint his former etymological studies was the reason why Andreas Tietze decided to compile the prior etymological publications in an extended lexicon.

The wide ranged material of lexemes, references and his articles are the main sources of the dictionary. Andreas Tietze had been collecting lexemes and references in card-index boxes his whole academic life. His etymological research focused on borrowings from European languages such as Italian, Greek, Slavic as well as Persian and Arabic and their development in Ottoman/Turkish. Words, which exhibit special grammatical features and are seldom found in dictionaries and those, whose etymology are not yet unequivocal, have been added first and foremost.

The first volume A through E was published 2002. Andreas Tietze's sudden death 22 December 2003 caused an Interruption of the ongoing work. At the beginning of 2008 the last corrections for the printing of Volume II (F to J) were finished. The Publishing of volumes III to VI is in preparation.

Das Fehlen eines umfassenden etymologischen Wörterbuches der türkischen Sprache und Aufforderungen von Kollegen, seine früheren etymologischen Studien nachzudrucken, waren die Gründe für Andreas Tietze, die früheren etymologischen Veröffentlichungen in einem erweiterten Wörterbuch zu sammeln. Das weitumfassende Material an Lexemen, Referenzen und seine Texte sind die wichtigsten Quellen des Wörterbuchs. Andreas Tietze hat sein ganzes akademisches Leben Lexeme und Verweise in Karteikasten gesammelt. Seine etymologische Forschung konzentrierte sich auf Anleihen aus europaischen Sprachen wie Italienisch, Griechisch, Slawisch sowie Persisch und Arabisch und ihre Entwicklung im Osmanisch-Türkischen.

Wörter, die besondere grammatikalische Funktionen aufweisen und nur selten in Wörterbüchern zu finden sind und solche, deren Etymologie nicht eindeutig ist, wurden in erster Linie gesammelt. Band l (A bis E) wurde 2002 in Wien (ÕAW) und Istanbul (Simurg) veröffentlicht. Andreas Tietzes plötzlicher Tod am 22. Dezember 2003 führte zu einer Unterbrechung der laufenden Arbeiten. Anfang 2008 konnte die Abschlusskorrektur zum vorliegenden Band II (F bis J) durchgeführt werden. Die Herausgabe der Bande III bis VI ist in Vorbereitung.

The exhibition entitled "Ankara: City of the Black Calpac, 1923-1938" (advisor: Turan Tanyer, curator: Ekrem Ism), tells the story of Ankara, the capital that became the image of the Republic and the exemplary lifeworld of the national idea, and focuses on its modernized look and its social life that was shaped by and around Ataturk.

We believe that everyone interested in the foundation period of the Republic and in Ankara will enjoy this exhibition, and that the exhibition catalogue prepared with utmost care by the Istanbul Research Institute will find its place on the bookshelves of interested readers.

This book consists of articles that analyze the rnodernızation experience of Turkey. It is an experience of political struggles that centered on the history of battles fought on two fronts: economy and derııocracy. In the world of Ottornan traditıon, neither existed as independent domains of activity. The economy was neıther autonomous nor selfgoverning, and neither were the people. The economy was auxıliary to a political logic of provision, welfare and warfare. The people were subject to a political center medıated by diverse cultures constıtutive of multıple communitıes.

Modernity entailed the disassociation of the economy from the state, and decoupling of the people from their local ties of culture. The disassociation of the economy from the administrative and rrıilitary imperatives of imperial rule is fundamentally the story of the formation of a market economy, and the decoupling of the individual from local cultures is essentially the story of the emergence of a national culture and the development of a nation of citizens. İt is the history and polıtics of this double transformation that is the major theme of thıs book.

If we are to judge contemporary Turkey by the standards it set for itself: How deeply and comprehensively is the nation a nation of cıtizens, and how free is the economy from partisanship, particularism and state patronage? How legalratıonal is the state? What is the balance of power among man as citizen (democracy) , economic man (market economy) , and the administrator-bureaucrat Istatel? In 1920s Sinasos, now Mustafapaşa, was a Cappadocian town with a population of 3.000, mostly made up of Greeks.
