Pessinous, the sacred city of the Anatolian Mother Goddess Kybele, is situated centrally on he Anatolian plateau, about 150 km southwest of the capital Ankara. A major part of the ancient city is situated under the modern village of Ballihisar. According to tradition, the site dates back to the Phrygian era as a cult site and settlement. The famous King Midas himself is supposed to have founded Pessinous and erected the first sanctuary of Kybele in the 8lh century BC. The cult of the Mother Goddess spread first across the Greek world and then from Pessinous throughout the Roman Empire, and conquered the classical world.
he excavations that have been carried out at the site since 1967 by the Belgian Archaeological teams of Ghent Iniversity have unearthed the heart of ancient Pessinous.

The ancient city of Elaiussa Sebaste (today Ayas) lies on the south-eastern coast of Turkey. The birth and the development of the settlement were granted by the favourable geographical position of the city, situated along the important coastal road connecting Asia Minor to Syria and projected in the intense commercial traffic of the eastern Mediterranean and, secondly, to the abundant natural resources of the hinterland - timber from the Tauro forests, vineyards and olive trees (elaion) to which the name Elaiussa itself alludes.
The site was, during the Roman age, one of the most important cities of the Roman province of Cilicia, which developed considerably in the 2nd and 3rd century AD; it maintained its prestigious role as significant trading port until the Late Empire and the first Byzantine age. Thanks to its long and continuous life, Elaiussa can be indeed qualified as a remarkable case study for the deepening of historical and archaeological knowledge on the dynamics of the development and evolution of urban centres in the Eastern Mediterranean area.
Prof. Dr. Eugenia EquiniSchneider (Universita diRoma "Sapienza", Italy) has been the head of the excavation team in Elaiussa Sebaste since 1995.

Training in Museological studies is a quite recent concept in Turkey but it is developing and studies and publications on this subject increase from day to day. The crux of the matter is to organise all of these individual enterprises under a single policy, with a regular and well-organised status and to spread it across the country. On the side of the universities, there is such an attempt: the “Museology Department” of the Institute of Social Sciences of Yıldız Technical University has been active since 1989 and that of the Institute of Social Sciences of Ankara University since 1997. Indeed, this is also within the scope of various other institutions. One leading institution is the Suna & İnan Kıraç Research Institute on Mediterranean Civilizations, in short AKMED, of the Vehbi Koç Foundation. AKMED has initiated an enterprise with the aim of spreading museological training across the country and of institutionalising it everywhere, above all amongst museum curators. Its first product is the First Museological Training Seminar for the Museums of the Mediterranean Region. It can be conjectured that such seminars will also be held in other regions of the country. Thus, it is reasonable to expect that, firstly, of all the museum curators and their professional organisations, then members of other non-governmental organisations, teachers and researchers will become involved in it. Certainly the most effective step will take place when this issue is undertaken by state offices.

The museological training seminar held at Antalya on October 10th - 11th, 2002, brought together curators from all the museums in the region, and members from the Museum Curators Society, the Archaeologists Society, the Anatolian Art Historian Society and the Society of Art History, as well as scholars from the relevant branches of the universities. The aim was to discuss both the developments in museology and the problems of museological training…

When attempting to understand and comment on the civilisation in which we live, one of the subjects that arouses the most curiosity is undoubtedly the desire to learn the stages that mankind has passed through to reach this point in time. In the book in front of you the author has attempted to describe, with archaeological facts, some of the development process of civilisation in the prehistoric period before the discovery of writing, from around 8000 to 2000 BC, in the region of Southwest Anatolia, Burdur and Antalya.

The presence of many impressive city and monuments from the Classical Period in the Antalya and Burdur regions and their vicinity reflects the importance of this region in historical times. However, the region also has important and interesting finds from the prehistoric periods. One of the aims of this book is to introduce and describe as many as possible of the visual finds uncovered in the excavations carried out over the past 50 years at the four main prehistoric settlements of the region, Hacilar, Kurucay, Hoyucek and Bademagaci.

While some of the pictures, drawings and plans are presented for the first time in this book, most of them have been published before in excavation reports, books or articles. However, as is the case in most academic fields, the majority of these publications are only read by professionals, making it virtually impossible for most people to have access to them. It is hoped that this book will help to change this situation to a degree, as it has been presented in such a way as to enable all those interested in the subject to benefit from the information given.
