Milet Band 1
Bauwerke in Milet - Teil 10
Milet Ergebnisse der Ausgrabungen und Untersuchungen seit dem Jahr 1899
This volume in the series on the excavations at Miletus presents the two structures located within the city of Miletus, Heroon II, a tomb in the form of a temple in antis on a podium, and Heroon III, a dominant vaulted structure within a peristyle. Weber has produced a comprehensive architectural analysis of the structures, a complete catalogue of the architectural components, and graphic reconstructions of them. In contrast to related buildings from this cultural area, the historical significance of Heroon II, erected in the Age of Hadrian, is distinguished by its monumental arrangement, which includes a two-storey arrangement of the walls with filigree Corinthian half-columns. The excavation and exploration of Heroon III, built in the Age of Severus has led to new insights into the division and settlement phases of this insula located in the centre of the city and to more certainty about the dimensions of the insula, which extended beyond the area previously assumed. This has provided a basis for revising the previous city plan drawn up 70 years ago.
