"Ilkhan has never been the name of a dynasty; it is a title that conveys allegiance to the Great Khan in Pekin. Therefore, it is more appropriate to use the name Persian Mongols instead of Ilkhanides, or better, Ilkhans." So says Omer Diler in this long awaited book of his. This book embodies a general history of the 18 Ilkhan sultans and the Ilkhan state that existed between the years 653 AH/l255AD and 758 AH/1357 AD; the coins they minted, their mint spellings and variations, intricate details and meticulous illustrations of 1676 coins (many drawn from a number of samples), as well as some 200 photographs. These coins were tracked down and found in an extremely wide range of sources: individual collections, auction lists, museum collec¬tions, numismatic foundation collections, history books, numismatic publications, the list goes on... The book is 672 pages, black and white, and a coloured 12 plates of photo¬graphs chosen from among those in the publication at the very end.
Omer Diler himself claims that "...to write a totally complete work of Ilkhan coins is also totally impossible". However, this is the best attempt to date, the result of extensive research that went on for twenty-five years and was completed just before he passed away. Sadly, this work of a lifetime is a posthumous publication.
